Four Key Categories Of Participants In The Semiconductor Industry

The semiconductor industry is principally made up of four key categories of participants. The first category comprises foundry operators, for example, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). These are businesses whose sole purpose is to undertake the production of semiconductor chips based on the specifications given to them by other companies. Think about them as factories crafting chips for different companies. 

Integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) make up the second category, with Intel as an example. IDMs manage the whole semiconductor chip lifecycle within their own facilities, from initial design through final fabrication.

The third category is made up of companies that only design chips. These companies can also be referred to as fabless companies. Nvidia and AMD are found in this category. They concentrate only on designing and developing semiconductor chips but outsource manufacturing to foundry operators since they do not have their own fabrication capabilities. 

The fourth and last category is made up of equipment manufacturers such as ASML. These companies are responsible for creating the equipment needed in the production of semiconductor chips. They provide the crucial tools required for chip construction by both foundry operators and integrated device manufacturers.

Intel And AMD’s New Chips

Intel has a new chip codenamed “Falcon Shores,” currently in production. It will have some impressive features, such as 288 gigabytes of memory, and will also support 8-bit floating-point computation. These specifications are essential for handling large and computationally demanding AI models, such as those used in services like ChatGPT. The Falcon Shores chip is expected to hit the market by 2025. Intel also claims that one of its most current chips, the Ponte Vecchio chip performs better than Nvidia’s latest AI chip, the H100. 

With the anticipated release of its flagship MI300X artificial intelligence chips, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is set to make a strong finish this year. CEO Lisa Su announced that AMD is ramping up production of the MI300 chips in the fourth quarter, responding to high customer interest and expanding collaboration with top-tier cloud providers, large enterprises, and leading AI companies.


The explosive growth of AI is driving a surge in semiconductor demand.
