LL Cool J and Jazmine Sullivan Cancel Wawa Welcome America Concert Performance in Solidarity with Striking Workers

LL Cool J and Jazmine Sullivan Withdraw from Wawa Welcome America Concert in Solidarity with Strikers

In a significant display of solidarity, renowned artists LL Cool J and Jazmine Sullivan have both opted not to perform at the annual Wawa Welcome America Fourth of July concert in Philadelphia. The decision stems from a labor strike involving the city’s largest municipal workers’ union, which continues to impact various services in the city.

Artists Stand Firm

LL Cool J made his stance clear in an Instagram post shared on Thursday night. He expressed his understanding of the struggles faced by municipal workers, stating, “There’s absolutely no way that I can perform, cross a picket line, and pick up money when I know that people are out there fighting for a living wage.” He emphasized his longstanding connection to Philadelphia and expressed hope for a resolution between the city and the striking workers.

Shortly after LL Cool J’s announcement, Jazmine Sullivan, a Philadelphia native, also shared her decision on social media, confirming her choice to support the striking workers affiliated with DC33. The AFSCME District Council 33 represents essential city workers, including trash collectors and police dispatchers, who have been on strike for four days.

Community Support and Union Remarks

Greg Boulware, president of DC33, thanked the artists for their support, stating, “LL Cool J’s decision to stand in solidarity with the labor movement is a powerful testament to his respect for workers’ rights.” Boulware also expressed gratitude for Sullivan’s involvement, highlighting how her recognition of municipal workers amplifies the importance of fair treatment and improved working conditions.

City’s Response

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker acknowledged LL Cool J’s decision, noting their conversation and expressing respect for his choice to prioritize unity over performance. “He is always welcome in Philadelphia,” Parker stated. She echoed similar sentiments regarding Sullivan, emphasizing the city’s love for the artist.

The ongoing union strike has raised pressing concerns within Philadelphia, particularly regarding municipal services, as waste continues to accumulate in various neighborhoods. As negotiations paused, the city awaits further developments. While many anticipated the Fourth of July concert as a suitable celebration, both LL Cool J and Jazmine Sullivan’s withdrawal highlights the ongoing struggles faced by workers in their fight for fair wages and better conditions.

Despite the absence of these notable headliners, the Wawa Welcome America team confirmed that other performers, including Álvaro Díaz, JoJo, and Mr. HOLLYWOOD DJ, are still scheduled to entertain on the Parkway. The concert festivities will commence at 4 p.m., followed by a fireworks display at dusk, ensuring a spirited, albeit altered, celebration of Independence Day.
