CDC Issues Warning as COVID-19 Cases Surge Across Multiple States This Summer

Rising COVID-19 Cases Prompt CDC Alert

As summer unfolds, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a significant uptick in COVID-19 cases across various regions of the United States. The latest findings indicate that infections are escalating in at least 26 states and Washington, D.C. Emergency room visits related to COVID-19, particularly among young children, have also surged, marking the highest levels since March 2025.

According to the CDC’s data, as of July 15, 2025, COVID-19 cases are on the rise in numerous areas, highlighting a concerning trend as the summer months progress.

Understanding the Surge

Dr. Jon LaPook, chief medical correspondent for CBS News, spoke on “CBS Mornings” about the typical cycle of COVID-19 spikes. He noted that both winter and summer spikes have become customary patterns. “Each year, we see a gradual decline in deaths and hospitalizations during each season,” he remarked, adding a note of optimism. However, he cautioned not to overlook the recent increases, especially for vulnerable populations.

“Anyone who is particularly susceptible, including young children under four, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, should take these trends seriously,” LaPook emphasized.

New Variants, Nimbus and Stratus

The emergence of new COVID-19 variants, dubbed Nimbus and Stratus, have not been shown to be more lethal than their predecessors, according to Dr. LaPook. He noted that previous variants, such as NB.1.8.1, yielded similar symptoms to earlier strains, including respiratory issues and systemic symptoms like fever and fatigue.

“Fortunately, the vaccines developed for this season remain effective against the current variants,” he added. Dr. LaPook urged caution and awareness, especially as individuals tend to relax their vigilance during summer.

COVID Vaccine Recommendations

The CDC continues to endorse the COVID-19 vaccine as a protective measure against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. However, there have been evolving guidelines regarding vaccination. Dr. LaPook outlined the somewhat perplexing phase we are in, with differing recommendations from the CDC and various health organizations.

  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists encourages vaccinations for pregnant individuals to transfer immunity to their babies.
  • Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. emphasized a shared decision-making approach regarding vaccinations.

The CDC’s current advice includes making informed decisions in consultation with healthcare providers regarding vaccinations for healthy children. For most adults aged 18 and older, the recommendation remains to receive the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine, particularly for those aged 65 and older or at high risk of severe illness.

COVID-19 Case Trends by State

Category States
Cases Growing Arkansas, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia
Cases Likely Growing Alaska, California, Delaware, D.C., Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin

As we navigate through this summer surge, it is imperative for individuals, particularly those in high-risk categories, to remain vigilant. Staying informed and discussing vaccinations with healthcare providers is crucial for personal and public health.
