Tragedy Strikes at Los Angeles Sheriff’s Training Facility
An explosion at the Biscailuz Center Training Academy in East Los Angeles on Friday morning resulted in the tragic deaths of three Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies. The blast occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m. PDT at a facility that has been operational since 2017.
During a press conference, Sheriff Robert Luna addressed the media but refrained from providing detailed information regarding the circumstances surrounding the explosion, citing an active investigation. Luna emphasized the ongoing nature of the inquiry, stating, “There’s a lot more that we don’t know than we do know.” He further added, “Our intent is to look at this from the very beginning and figure out what exactly caused this tragic event.”
Identities of the Fallen Deputies
The sheriff’s department identified the three deputies as:
Name | Years of Service | Division |

Detective Victor Lemus | 24 | Arson Explosives Detail |
Detective William Osborn | 30 | Arson Explosives Detail |

Incident Details and Investigation
Authorities revealed that the incident may be linked to an ongoing investigation involving a grenade discovered in a garage in Santa Monica. Law enforcement officials stated that the grenade was transported to the training facility for examination. Reports indicate that the explosion occurred in the parking lot of the Special Enforcement Bureau as work was underway to neutralize the device.
In the aftermath of the explosion, a specialized task force, including the LAPD Bomb Squad, the FBI, and ATF agents, was dispatched to Santa Monica to conduct further searches for other potential explosives. Investigators are still trying to determine if the grenade and the recent explosion are connected.
In response to the incident, law enforcement evacuated local residents and sought arrangements for their temporary shelter. U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that federal agents were present at the scene, facilitating the investigation.
Community Response
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her condolences and confirmed that local law enforcement was on the scene to assist. Chief of LAPD Jim McDonnell stated, “We stand in solidarity with our Sheriff’s Department colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom was also briefed on the situation, committing state assistance as needed. The ATF has deployed its National Response Team to oversee the investigation, a group known for responding to high-profile incidents such as the 9/11 Pentagon attack and the Oklahoma City bombing.
Chair of the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, Kathryn Barger, shared her sorrow over the situation, noting her heartbreak at the loss and her commitment to staying informed about the developments.
As the community mourns, the focus remains on finding answers regarding the tragic event that has affected the lives of many in Los Angeles.
