Massachusetts Retirees Embrace Social Security Fairness Act as 2.5 Million Retroactive Payments Are Processed

Massachusetts Public Sector Retirees Celebrate Social Security Fairness Act

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has recently announced the processing of over 2.5 million retroactive payments for public sector retirees, including teachers, firefighters, and police officers, who were previously excluded from receiving their full retirement benefits. This milestone was confirmed by the SSA in a statement released last week.

Signed into law by President Biden in January 2025, the Social Security Fairness Act mandates adjustments for approximately 3.2 million individuals, encompassing revised future and past benefits. According to a May 27 update from the SSA, about 90% of the cases have been addressed, allowing those with public pensions who were hindered by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) to now receive compensation.

Retroactive Payments: What to Expect

Payments began to be issued on February 25, 2025, and beneficiaries should have seen a one-time retroactive payment deposited into their accounts by the end of March 2025. Furthermore, recipients of monthly benefits began noticing increases starting in April, as Social Security payments typically reflect the prior month’s benefits.

What If Payments Are Delayed?

For those yet to receive their benefits, it’s important to note that the SSA has indicated some individuals may encounter waits lasting a year or longer. The agency has implemented automation processes to expedite payments; however, cases requiring manual review may take additional time. Currently, there are approximately 200,000 cases pending automation processing, as per the SSA’s representatives.

Beneficiaries who have not yet received their payments are encouraged to verify their account details at www.ssa.gov/myaccount or contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to confirm that their address and direct deposit information are accurate. The agency noted, “Ensuring that SSA has the correct information allows you to get any retroactive benefits and your new benefit amount quicker.”

Benefit Increases: How Much Can You Expect?

The amount of additional payment will vary depending on multiple factors, including the type of Social Security benefit and pension received. For some individuals, adjustments may be minimal, while others could potentially see monthly increases of over $1,000.

Beneficiaries receiving adjustments will be notified via mail regarding any changes to their benefits.

For Those Who Haven’t Applied for Retirement Benefits

If an individual has not yet applied for retirement or spousal benefits due to previous federal laws, they will need to submit an application. Applications can be completed at www.ssa.gov/apply. Since the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act, the SSA has reportedly processed over 200,000 new benefit applications, with 87% already completed.

Category Total Beneficiaries Pending Cases
Processed Retroactive Payments 2,500,000 200,000
Total Individuals Affected 3,200,000 N/A

As this significant change unfolds, retirees across Massachusetts are hopeful about the positive impacts the Social Security Fairness Act will have on their financial futures.
