California State Fair Embraces Homegrown Cannabis
The California State Fair has introduced an intriguing addition to its lineup this year, designed to ignite enthusiasm for cannabis cultivation among attendees. The newly launched California Cannabis Experience exhibit invites adults to take home a packet of cannabis seeds, igniting the potential for a personal growing adventure. As visitors explore the exhibit, they’re not just learning about the plant; they’re also getting a unique opportunity to cultivate it themselves.
A Tradition with a Twist
Getting freebies is a cherished tradition at the fair, and this year, thousands of cannabis seeds are being handed out to eager participants. According to Dustin Moore, co-founder of Embarc, “We’ve already given away thousands of seeds. Under California law, we have to sell them for a penny to be compliant.” This nominal fee enables attendees to not only receive their seeds legally but also encourages responsible cannabis cultivation.
Cultivating a Growing Interest
The intention behind this initiative is clear: to inspire Californians to engage with cannabis in a responsible and enjoyable manner. “It’s important, as we normalize cannabis in a responsible way, to encourage folks to grow at home,” Moore emphasized. Scott Vasterling, founder of Humboldt Family Farms, expressed similar sentiments, stating, “We would love nothing more than to have as many people as possible popping these seeds in their backyard and getting some experience with this beautiful plant.”
Growing Made Simple
Experts emphasize that growing cannabis is a straightforward process. As Moore puts it, “It’s a weed, literally. That’s why they call it weed, so growing cannabis is about as simple as keeping a weed alive in your backyard. Sun, water, and fertilizer, and a little bit of love. That’s all it takes.” The ability to grow up to six plants for personal use is a testament to California’s progressive stance on cannabis, although specific regulations regarding outdoor cultivation may vary by location.
A Competitive Edge for Home Growers
The California State Fair is no stranger to celebrating the best of cannabis, already hosting Golden Bear awards for the finest products. Interestingly, attendees who receive seeds this year may find themselves competing in a new category exclusively for home growers. “We’ll have the same opportunity to grow their cannabis at home and compete alongside the best farmers in the state of California,” Moore explained.
